The Burton Overy Dancers folk dance club was formed 50 years ago by a group who had attended English Folk Dance evening classes led by John and Pauline Osband.
After attending classes for three or four years the group met independently for a summer season and decided to form themselves into a club and invite others to join. As three of the couples lived in Burton Overy, and the Village Hall was available on Wednesday evenings, that was chosen as the venue – hence the name!
At that time the hall was a very draughty and rather small wooden hut, resulting in the club having to restrict its membership. However a new, improved and larger hall was built in 2011/12 so the club could expand its membership to over 60, with attendances at weekly dances of 30 to 40.
As well as our regular club nights we hold some special dances featuring live bands and well-known Callers, and we organise a number of other social activities.
We are affiliated to the English Folk Dance & Song Society (EFDSS).
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
In addition to our dances, the club also organises a number of social activities for members to meet, relax and enjoy each other’s company. In recent years these have included;-
A Christmas Lunch
New Year’s Day Walk and Lunch
Sunday pub lunches
Summer Open-air Theatre trip
Summer walk and Fish & Chips supper
Summer Garden BBQ
Details of all such activities will be posted on the SPECIAL EVENTS page
Covid-19 update (September 2025)
We are aware that Covid-19 infection is still in the general population. Please do not attend BOD dancing if you have recently tested Covid-positive, or if you have possible Covid symptoms, or if you have been in recent close contact with somebody known to be infected with Covid.
We suggest the following measures to minimise the risk of spreading the virus;-
1. If you have had recent contact with somebody known to have a Covid infection please take a Lateral Flow Test and only come along if the result is negative.
2. We encourage people to use the hand-washing facilities in the toilets in order to maintain good hygiene, particularly at refreshment breaks. We will endeavour to have hand-sanitiser available but members are welcome to bring their own.
3. We will ventilate the hall by opening some windows, unless too cold.
4. We do not require the wearing of face masks, but members are welcome to do so if they feel safer that way.
5. We shall make and serve tea/coffee as usual, but members are welcome to bring their own refreshment and/or mug, if they prefer.
6. Disposable covers are available for the microphones, so that callers can change them for their personal use and and discard afterwards.
